CryptoWiener is a Vienna-based artist collective that uses blockchain technology to record Austrian and Viennese culture. The group formed in 2018 out of curiosity about crypto, blockchain and non-fungible tokens, and works mainly in hand-pixelated 32×32 portraits, among them Sigmund Freud, Niki Lauda and the former Viennese mayor Michael Häupl. Other series include Proof of History, which renders episodes from blockchain history in pixel style, and geVIENNAratives, released on Art Blocks. The collective's exhibitions often combine physical and digital space, with pixel portraits enlarged into larger-than-life figures. It held the solo exhibition PIXELS by CryptoWiener at the Offenes Kulturhaus in Linz from August 2022 to February 2023, and its work appeared in Art of Punk, a 2024 exhibition of works by CryptoPunk holders staged at the Francisco Carolinum and in Voxels.
