Ganbrood

Ganbrood is the pseudonym of Bas Uterwijk, born in Amsterdam in 1968 to an actor father and a designer mother. He worked in special effects and 3D animation for film and television in the 1990s, served as an art director for Guerrilla Games on the Killzone series, and spent around thirteen years as a documentary and reportage photographer. When that income halted during the pandemic, a friend introduced him to Artbreeder, and he began experimenting with BigGAN and StyleGAN to reconstruct historical figures from paintings. His reconstructions of Napoleon and Jesus went viral on Instagram. He has minted works as NFTs since March 2021, beginning on Tezos and later on Ethereum, and has been represented by Kate Vass Galerie since 2022. Recent projects include the Van Gogh series Looking for Vincent and The Second Gaze, shown at Paris Photo in 2025.
